Robin Younge, vocalist & guitarist of Darker The Sky,
could tell you all about the darkness and the light of life.
A troubled childhood forced Robin
to leave home and be on his own at a very young age.
While living in government housing for his
teenage years, he discovered the power and
beauty of music when he first heard Blue
Valentine by Tom Waits. Shortly thereafter
he
was inspired and began discovering his
own
songwriting abilities at the age of 14.
Once Robin gathered enough of his own
songs, he sold one of his own oil paintings to
raise enough money to record them. Years
passed and Robin continued working on his
craft, writing songs, playing live and releasing
an indie album under Keema Shield in 2005.
In late 2006, when drummer Chris Warunki discovered Robin's captivating demo of
A SONG CALLED SPACE.
Despite playing in several bands, and touring, the song remained on repeat in Chris' subconscious and haunted by
Robin's powerful vocals and melodies, he felt compelled to one day contact Robin to commend him on the song.
The seed that eventually become Darker The Sky was planted.
Upon contacting Robin, they soon realized that they had a lot in common, not only geographically (living only
minutes apart from each other) but artistically and musically as well. Naturally, a friendship and musical partnership
began. After two years of growth and collaboration, including a few band name and member changes, Robin and
Chris decided on Darker The Sky. It's taken from the optimistic phrase darker the sky, brighter the star,
representing the contrast of their music which is dark, dense and edgy with moments of lightness, space and beauty.
In 2008 the duo were completed by the addition of Jason Adams and Brandon Cherrington.
Jason, a singer & songwriter himself,
(also bandmates with Chris in The Imperial Playground),
was recruited for his endless guitar talent
(as well as backing vocals and the atmospheric pedal steel).
Brandon, a Sound Engineer & Producer,
joined the group, not only for his production & engineering
talents, but for his all-encompassing and atmospheric
Eno-esq keyboard soundscapes.
*Sometime in 2009*
Brandon decided to bow out of the live lineup but still works with the band as a producer & engineer. Jason
decided to move off the bass to focus on pushing the pedal steel to new heights in a rock band context (seldom
heard, if ever!) and Joseph McCance was brought into the fold to handle bass duties. Currently Darker The
Sky is claiming 2009 as their year by turning heads and gaining fans with their live performances, 4 song EP,
and their online presence including facebook, myspace, sonicbids, reverbnation, twitter and their own site.
This visceral musical monolith,
described as having the universal beauty of Jeff Buckley,
the raw power of Nirvana, and the epic grandeur of Muse,
is seeking interested record labels, publishing companies, booking agencies,
and management companies to join them in their epic quest for superstardom.
